Winterland is an incorporated inland town between Garnish and Marystown on the Burin Peninsula. Established through a government-supported agricultural settlement in 1939, it differs from the peninsula’s coastal communities through its farming origins, dispersed land base, and road-based relationship with nearby service centres.
The Town of Winterland records that the settlement was one of eight communities commissioned by the Newfoundland government in 1939 to create farming opportunities during a period of high unemployment. The first families came from Port Elizabeth, Garnish, Burin, and Baine Harbour. Settlers cleared land, built homes and barns, raised livestock, grew root crops, and organized a cooperative store.
Winterland’s inland agricultural plan distinguishes it from towns established directly around fishing harbours. Later resettlement from Port Elizabeth increased the community, while employment and specialized shopping often connected residents with Marystown and other nearby towns. The directory treats Winterland as its own incorporated community and uses the Burin regional page for services that cross municipal boundaries. Business profiles should state delivery areas, visiting arrangements, and operating hours clearly where customers or providers travel between communities. Its inland setting makes road access central to deliveries, appointments, supplies, and regional work across the peninsula.
