Burin is an incorporated town on a protected inlet of Placentia Bay on the eastern side of the Burin Peninsula. Its municipal boundary joins a number of older coastal settlements, including Burin North, Ship Cove, Burin Bay, Burin Bay Arm, Salt Pond, and Port au Bras.
The Town of Burin traces permanent settlement to the early eighteenth century, with European fishing activity in the area documented earlier. A sheltered inlet supported the fishery and related work such as boatbuilding, sailmaking, iron work, and trade. Burin incorporated in 1950 around Burin North, Ship Cove, and Burin Bay, then expanded in 1970 to include several surrounding settlements and coves.
Present-day Burin is therefore a dispersed municipality rather than one compact town centre. Health care, education, municipal services, trades, tourism, and everyday businesses serve residents across its connected settlements and nearby parts of the peninsula. The directory uses Burin as the municipal profile while retaining Burin Bay Arm as a linked neighbourhood because that place name remains useful in addresses and local navigation. This structure keeps local searches precise without presenting one municipality as unrelated markets. Daily regional road travel also links these communities through Routes 220, 221, and 222.
