Grand Bank is an incorporated fishing town on the western side of the Burin Peninsula near Fortune Bay. Its harbour, waterfront, historic streets, merchant and schooner history, public services, and road connection with Fortune give it a distinct local centre within the peninsula’s southwest communities.
The Town of Grand Bank records French fishing activity by the seventeenth century and later English settlement connected with Saint-Pierre. Inshore fishing developed into a major bank fishery during the late nineteenth century. Merchants, schooner fleets, shipyards, fish curing, and overseas trade shaped the waterfront and helped establish Grand Bank as a commercial centre for the surrounding part of Fortune Bay.
Changes in fisheries and processing altered that economy, but the town retains a strong physical record of its seafaring past. Historic buildings, museums, memorials, the waterfront, health and community facilities, and newer enterprises now share the municipal landscape. The directory keeps Grand Bank separate from nearby Fortune because each is an incorporated town with its own services and business addresses, while the Burin regional page supports searches that span both towns and the wider peninsula. Accurate location data also separates Grand Bank listings from Fortune and smaller nearby communities.
