Trinity is an incorporated town on Trinity Bay, distinguished by a protected harbour and a closely preserved historic townscape. Its waterfront, lanes, fisheries and mercantile buildings, cultural sites, accommodations, and seasonal visitor activity connect present-day local enterprise with a long North Atlantic history.
The Town of Trinity documents Indigenous use of the area over thousands of years and European seasonal fishing in the harbour by the sixteenth century. The protected port later supported settlement, the fishery, and trade. By the eighteenth century, merchant firms connected Trinity and surrounding fishing communities with markets across the Atlantic, leaving a substantial collection of commercial, religious, public, and residential buildings.
Heritage NL recognizes the Trinity Heritage Area as a municipal heritage district. Its historic core includes wooden dwellings, fisheries buildings, churches, public structures, cemeteries, roads, and lanes shaped by the shoreline and surrounding hills. Preservation work has made this built landscape central to Trinity’s current identity, supporting museums, cultural experiences, food, accommodations, and other services for residents and visitors. The same preservation work supports a compact, walkable visitor area, but the profile remains a community directory rather than treating the town only as a seasonal attraction. Residents and essential services remain throughout the year.
