Labrador City is an incorporated, planned mining town in western Labrador near the Quebec border. Together with neighbouring Wabush, it forms the Labrador West service area, where iron ore operations, rail and road links, public facilities, retail, trades, and recreation support a remote northern population.
The provincial municipal plan links Labrador City’s development to the Labrador Trough iron ore deposits and the rail connection built toward Sept-Îles in the 1950s. The community began as a planned work camp for the Carol mining project around 1960. Housing, schools, health facilities, roads, and municipal services were developed as the temporary camp became a permanent town.
Mining remains central to Labrador West, but Labrador City also provides the everyday services required by residents, workers, and nearby communities. Retail, accommodations, food, professional services, construction, equipment support, recreation, education, and public administration operate within a regional economy shared with Wabush. The directory keeps the two incorporated towns separate while connecting both through the Labrador West regional page. Long distances and a northern climate also make accurate hours, service areas, transportation details, and direct contact information especially useful when people compare local options before arranging necessary travel across Labrador West in winter.
