Happy Valley-Goose Bay is an incorporated town in central Labrador where road, air, and marine connections meet near Lake Melville. Its transportation infrastructure, public institutions, Indigenous and settler communities, and range of commercial services give it a regional role extending well beyond the municipal boundary.
The town traces its modern development to the air base built at Goose Bay in 1941. Civilian settlement grew alongside the base, and the former Town of Happy Valley and Local Improvement District of Goose Bay were incorporated together as Happy Valley-Goose Bay in 1973. Military and civilian aviation remain important parts of the community’s history and physical layout.
The municipality describes Happy Valley-Goose Bay as the Labrador location where road, sea, and air services converge. Routes across central and southern Labrador, the airport, and access toward Lake Melville support government, training, professional, retail, transportation, and community services. The town is also shaped by a diverse Indigenous and non-Indigenous population and by connections with nearby North West River and Sheshatshiu as well as more distant Labrador communities. Because those connections cover long distances, regional service areas and delivery information can be as important to directory users as a storefront address within the town.
