Gander Business Directory

Gander is an incorporated town in central Newfoundland whose location and development are closely tied to aviation. The international airport, planned townsite, road connections, public services, and commercial facilities make Gander a service centre for communities across a wide part of central and northeastern Newfoundland.

Local context

Gander began with construction of the Newfoundland Airport in 1936 at Milepost 213 on the former Newfoundland Railway. The airfield became strategically important during the Second World War and later served civilian transatlantic aviation. Construction of the present townsite began in the 1950s, moving homes and services away from the runways, and the municipality was incorporated during that period.

The Town of Gander describes the community as a regional service centre supported by transportation, communications, education, public administration, defence, recreation, and retail activity. Gander International Airport and 9 Wing Gander remain major institutions. For directory users, that regional role means local businesses often serve residents of the town, airport travellers, and people arriving from many smaller communities within central Newfoundland. The town’s planned layout, airport history, and position on the Trans-Canada Highway continue to make transportation and regional access central to how people use local services in nearby communities and beyond.
